October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Know Your Normal, Care for Your Health
Written by : Heather Zuzo Rph
Every October, pink ribbons appear as a reminder of a cause that’s close to so many hearts. Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For me, this month carries deep personal meaning. I’ve been directly affected by breast cancer, and that experience changed the way I view health, wellness, and self-care.
Through that journey, I learned one lesson I’ll never forget: early detection saves lives.
Know Your Normal
One of the most powerful things you can do for yourself is to know your normal. Everyone’s body is different, and paying attention to changes. No matter how small, it can make all the difference.
Perform regular self-breast exams, keep up with your recommended screenings, and don’t ignore when something doesn’t feel right. These small, consistent habits are acts of self-love and self-advocacy.
Life gets busy, but taking time for your health is essential. Early detection not only saves lives, it gives people more treatment options and a stronger chance at recovery.
The Emotional Side: Anxiety and the Fear of Recurrence
Even after treatment ends, the emotional journey often continues. The fear of recurrence — or what many call “scanxiety” — is real and deeply personal. The days or weeks leading up to a mammogram or follow-up appointment can bring waves of anxiety and worry.
As someone who has been there, I know how heavy that feeling can be. Talking about it openly can help lighten the load. Whether it’s with friends, family, or others who truly understand — connection helps.
Here in Western Pennsylvania, groups like 412Thrive offer incredible community and support for those affected by breast cancer. They provide connection, education, and understanding to people at all stages of the journey. Knowing you’re not alone can bring comfort and strength during difficult moments.
Medical Marijuana in Pennsylvania: Supporting Cancer and Anxiety Care
At Maitri, we believe in compassionate, informed care — meeting each patient where they are on their wellness journey.
In Pennsylvania, both cancer (including remission therapy) and anxiety disorders are approved medical conditions under the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program. This means that patients who qualify can consult with a certified physician to determine whether medical marijuana might be appropriate for their care plan.
Many patients living with or recovering from cancer use medical marijuana to help manage symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, pain, and trouble sleeping. While everyone’s experience is unique, it’s encouraging that Pennsylvania recognizes the potential benefits of cannabis as part of a holistic approach to well-being.

A Message from the Heart
As someone who’s personally walked this path, I want to remind everyone reading this: take care of yourself. Do your self-breast exams. Schedule your mammogram. Talk about what you’re feeling — both physically and emotionally.
This month, and every month, Maitri stands in solidarity with survivors, thrivers, caregivers, and those currently in treatment. We honor your strength and are here to provide education, compassion, and support for every step of the journey.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is more than just pink ribbons. It’s about empowerment, early detection, and community. Together, with organizations like 412Thrive, we can continue spreading awareness, offering hope, and reminding one another to know your normal. Because early detection truly saves lives.
