It’s Time to Age Your Way –

May is Older Adult Month - The theme of 2022 is Age My Way, an opportunity for all of us to explore the many ways older adults can remain and be involved in their communities.

According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, marijuana use among older people in the United States is increasing more than any other demographic. In the past ten years, cannabis use among 50 to 64 year-olds increased by 57.8 percent and 250 percent among people 64-years-old or older.

Did you know Maitri has a Specialty Pharmacy Team for Our Older Adults?

We recognize that there are risks and benefits to all medications, including Medical Marijuana, especially in the Older Adult population. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. More than 80 percent of older patients (ages 57 to 85) use at least one prescription medication daily, with more than 50 percent taking more than five medications or supplements daily.

If you are an older adult or you know or care for someone who can benefit from some help with their medical marijuana selection, a Medical Marijuana Pharmacy expert may be the answer. Maitri Senior Care pharmacists go far beyond the review of medications. Each have extensive knowledge and over 135 years of combined experience in:

• Recognizing and understanding diseases and conditions common in the older adult population

• Promoting healthy living and disease prevention in older adults

• Identifying drug-related problems that can cause, aggravate, or contribute to common geriatric problems

• Understanding the role of the caregiver and the financial challenges older adults face, and the importance of proper product selection and dosage.

Our pharmacist will review your medication lists, check for any drug interactions, and offer a baseline mini-Cog® to ensure that your medical marijuana therapy dosing does not cause any serious decline in your cognitive impairment (memory) or put you at risk for falls.

In your Senior Care Medical Marijuana Care Plan, the pharmacist identifies and works with you and your caregiver to review your symptoms and find products that are best suited for optimal therapeutic and/or functional outcomes.

We can also assist you and/or your caregiver with curbside pick-up at our Pittsburgh dispensary. We schedule special times on Mondays and Tuesdays to meet with our older adults when the dispensary is less busy than normal either on the phone or in person at the dispensary. And of course, we offer our senior peacock reduction.

Please remember, that you must have a valid Medical Marijuana card or be a registered caregiver to enter the dispensary per Department of Health Requirements, but we can gladly talk to you and your caregiver via phone to develop a plan.

Once you join the Senior Care Peacock family, the pharmacy care team will follow up on a regular basis to check in about dosing adjustments, symptom improvement, and any potential unwanted side effects.
